The problem with BUCF

I don’t think I’ve ever been referred to as a left-winger in my entire life.  So I was honoured to see this post on the “award-winning” Birmingham University Conservative Future blog, accusing us comrades of harbouring secret left-wing tendencies.

The problem with BUCF is that they mostly appear to spend all their time on their own blog, or on other people’s blogs.  Another problem is they get very upset when you call them Thatcherite.  They shouldn’t be ashamed of it.  I spend an incredible short time on their blog, but what I do see is truly harrowing.  Borderline racist, homophobic and anti-disablist comments can often be seen (please don’t make out that I’m blanketly calling them all racist/homophobic etc. I’m far from it).  It’s just evidence of how out of touch I believe they are and how shocking it is that they represent the “future” of their shameful party.

They claim to be part of the changing party.  Supporting a party that believes all married couples should be given that little-extra tax break (because being married is so worthy of state support).  That’s not being the party of change, that’s being the party of rigid, dictatorial and traditionalist dogma which is trying to instil unto us that if you’re from a single parent household, you’re going to be somehow damaging the state of our country in such a way that the Government must step in to control this unruly rabble.

We have a different approach in BULS, we go out and campaign, in our Guild and in our local area, and I will walk the streets until I am without shoes to ensure that a Conservative Government remains a thing of the past and never a thing of the future.

  1. Tom with all due respect… Labour spend a heck of a lot longer on our blog than we do yours. Also we afford you far more courtesy than some of your esteemed colleagues afford us. I must be honest I was irritated when I saw the BUCF post on what is “wrong” with BULS but I believe you are equally as bad for responding in kind. You completely lost the moral high ground.

I would also remind you that it was BULS who started this stupidity when they published a blog on the BUCF posting on Thatcher, the Queen etc. As far as I am concerned… The Queen is our head of state…. Thatcher is the greatest PM we have ever had… we are entitled to blog about them if they come up in the news…and we can argue it until we are blue in the face but they are the facts. Perhaps if BULS spent less time “demonising” Thatcher, (who left office 20odd years ago) criticising the Queen, (who remains more popular than any politician or party in this country) and focusing on BUCF (which a fair portion of your posts seem to be about) then maybe Labour wouldnt be heading for opposition! :P

LEARN FROM THE TORY MISTAKES OF 1997… DONT REPEAT THEM

  2. I congratulate you on your speedy response. Unfortunately you only stated one fact, the queen is indeed the head of state, whether or not Thatcher is the greatest PM ever is opinion. I honestly think little credit is given to the Marquess of Rockingham who was a fine Prime Minister. I do however see little evidence of change in the Cameron Tories, after being in charge for a considerable amount of time.

I don’t think I’ve ever blogged about BUCF, and I can’t remember there ever being a blog specifically about them. Perhaps my memory has escaped me though.

Theres one for a start… and If you review your blogs(not you individually but the blog as a whole)then you will see there is a fair number centralised wholly around the conservative party… perhaps not just CF but the conservative party as a whole. If Labour have so many achievements that you rave about on our blog… lets hear about them… tell us what you as a group are up to… not focus on what the tories are up to. We should be flattered really about the amount of attention BULS pay us… and as for us not changing… well… I disagree… but the opinion polls certainly have changed :P So maybe by your logic we don’t need to change at all… we just need to let you all screw up… which seems to be quite a habit of late.

  4. Tom you are one of the BULS members I have a lot of respect and I am not going to get into a fight over opinions, not yet anyway.

However, it is one thing to call you lefties and stuck in the past, it is completely different to say you find some of our posts homophobic, I would like you to provide one single post where this is the case.

if you find one I will make sure it is rectified.

If you cannot find one I am sure you will withdraw the comment.

  5. [...] 14 02 2008 Whilst trawling through the quite frankly petty debate that is occurring on both the BULS and BUCF blogs, one thought occurred to me more than anything [...]

  6. Yes, this is rather petty - but I’m enjoying it more than I am getting upset by it. One point editorbucf made has amused me somewhat…

Tom Guise: “Borderline racist, homophobic and anti-disablist comments can often be seen”
Editorbucf: “it is one thing to call you lefties and stuck in the past, it is completely different to say you find some of our posts homophobic, I would like you to provide one single post where this is the case”

Is that an admission that you’ve already found some racist and anti-disablist posts?

  7. I knew you were going to say that John!! I didn’t see anti-disablist at first! But any post on that again I would certainly rectify.

But on the racism issue, according to some people ouir 2005 immigration policy was racist!

However, if you can provide proof of these like I said I will gladly rectify them.

If not, I will ask for the comments to be withdrawn.
