Who are you backing?

Yes, it’s that long awaited for by-election today in Haltemprice and Howden, and the nation is on the edge of its seat to see who will become their new MP. Will David Davis hold onto the post? Or will it go to one of the other 26 candidates vying for the role? In the absence of any main stream parties, I have gone looking for another candidate to back.

I am interested by Jill Saward, a rape victim and campaigner who has done marvellous work in the past and is against David Davis on the issue of a DNA database (it would undoubtedly drive up rape convictions), and David Bishop, from the Church of the Militant Elvis Party. The socialist in me admires his stance on todays capitalist society (It made Elvis a “fat media joke”). Not so keep on his plan to put cameras in Nick Clegg’s bedroom, though, or to imprison Cherie Blair, so I think he’ll have to come off the short list.

So, who are you backing?

  1. “or to imprison Cherie Blair”

Are you really sure about that?

    Vote Green in H&H!

  2. Ooh didn’t notice the greens on the list…

  3. DAVIS… all the way… who’s Labours candidate?… oh yes thats right!….

  4. Turn out of 34%, less than half of 2005. 23 people lost their deposits, a woman who won Miss Great Britian and was thrashed in Crewe & Nantwich came 5th.

All in all a complete waste of time and money.

  5. ‘a woman who won Miss Great Britian and was thrashed in Crewe & Nantwich came 5th’

Miss Great Britain is to H&H as Labour is to Henley. A glorious victory for DD.

  6. Glorious victory? Against who? People that wanted the smoking ban reinstated? People who were named after farmyard animals?

What exactly has he won? The number of people voting for him was reduced. The turnout was halved, suggesting people don’t care as much as they want him to. He wanted to keep the 42 day limit in the public eye but he failed miserably, as most people outside the constituency forgot there was a by-election on. I know I did until yesterday.

All he did was waste £80k of taxpayers money on a glorified publicity stunt.

  7. this by-election does not change anything. the house of commons authorities are even giving his old office back to him, his stuff was put in boxes but not removed.

a complete shambles of a contest. i am so proud that my party did nothing to encourage this self-serving act. it was simply not worth it.

  8. Of course I was being kind. As Brij suggests, Saward was Labour’s proxy candidate and scored 6th place. Re glorious victory, 72% in a 26-horse race is remarkable by any measure. You do surprise me, Tom, when you say you are proud of your party.

  9. Tom your party should be packing their own boxes.

  10. Gone are the days when labour screamed ‘you tories dont stand for anything etc…the new line is ‘is that the best question you can think of?’ harman , incidentally, at pmqs was pathetic.

  11. 72% in a 26 horse race may look good on paper, but when 23 of the horses are so lame they should have been put down before the race was started, and the other 2 are usually that far down the field they are usually battling for last place, 72% doesn’t look all that good. The electorate gave their verdict by not turning up, with turnout down by well over 50%. That there is the biggest indication of voter feeling. It was a great big “Am I Bovvered?” to those who stood in the election.

I agree with Tom, the election was a pathetic farce and I’m glad Labour played no part in it.

  12. I just can’t believe Elvis dude didn’t scrape a hundred votes. Shocking.
